As I'm sure you've heard, London weather can be quite unpredictable. Londoners are known to regularly carry both sunglasses and an umbrella. But London weather is never so extreme as to detract from all the great things to do in the city.

The seasons change gradually, and winter can appear to still be happening when we should be into spring, but the weather is never so bad as to stop you from planning a trip to London.

London has a temperate climate with distinct seasonal changes in weather, generally no extremes of hot and cold and frequent light precipitation year round. London had a micro-climate known as an ‘urban heat island’, where the mass of heated buildings and people result in temperatures that are a couple of degrees warmer than outside of the city. As a result, London is one the warmest places in the UK and very rarely sees snowfall in the city.

Also, contrary to popular belief, average annual rainfall in London is not particularly high – Sydney, for example has higher annual rainfall. It’s just that there are a high number of those grey drizzly days… Total rainfall may not be that high, but the number of ‘rainy days’ is. Mild and damp is a good way to describe London’s climate.

Weather can vary a lot from year to year; perhaps you might get a particularly cold winter, or a particularly wet summer, or a very hot one. That’s the thing if you come to visit London; you just don’t quite know what you’re going to get.

The hottest time of the year is normally August, when the peak temperature can be 30°C (90°F) but the average in August is about 22°C (70°F).

London is an all-year-round destination, so major attractions are not seasonal, although there is an uptick in the number of visitors during the summer months.

London weather is generally mild, just remember to bring a lightweight raincoat to keep in your day-pack. There's so much to do in London, both indoors and outdoors, that you never worry if you have to change your plans - you will always find something happening in this vibrant city!
